The Brew City Bruisers are Milwaukee’s women’s roller derby league. The Bruisers are made up of four teams: the Crazy Eights, Maiden Milwaukee, the Rushin’ Rollettes and the Shevil Knevils.
2016 marks the 10 year anniversary of the Bruisers, and I was asked to design 5 shirts for the season; one for each team and one that represents the anniversary season. The client’s vision was to express the evolution of roller derby throughout the decades, with each team representing one of them. Every team initially had an inclination towards certain decades based on their branding, and I decided to play that up even further for the tees. This resulted in Maiden Milwaukee representing the 1950’s, the Rushin’ Rollettes with the 1960’s, the Shevil Knevils with the 1970’s, and the Crazy Eights representing the 1990’s.
The season tee features each personification of the decades, with the central figure serving as the modern view of roller derby as a sport.
